The feelings he adds to the words sweeps the listener away to Savannah, investigating the case along Locke and Key, feeling the heat sizzling between them. He captured the feel of it and the characters and he always makes it easy to follow the story with his many distinct voices. I would have loved more down-time with them, where they just hung out for the sake of it, getting to know each other more – because let’s face it, they are still new to each other and have lots of things to learn about the other. I do see the need of some of it, showing how they progress in their relationship, but it shouldn’t be the only area their relationship is growing in. There is definitely a lot more steam in this book compared to the first one. I do know one thing, there are questions that needs to be asked, and the answers might change everything – and they might be devastating. Evidence of what only time will tell, but I do have my suspicions. He’s still far from over his former partner’s suicide and as they investigate their current case new evidence are uncovered. Locke especially has a rough go of it this time around. Stakes and emotions are high throughout this book and not only where this case is concerned.

As they navigate through the facts the case grows bigger and bigger, involving more players that don’t always play well together. Someone is harassing the mayor of Savannah and our duo is tasked to figure out who it is and stop them. Things are heating up in Devil’s Hour, figuratively and literally. The rag is lit, the Molotov cocktail is tossed, and the zero hour is upon them. Royce will need to draw on his grit now more than ever if he hopes to realize the dreams that are finally within reach. When menace becomes murder, the two detectives will race the clock against the devil to save their beloved city from becoming a raging inferno. Scarier than The Purists’ elusiveness is their ability to turn public opinion in their favor, creating unrest and threatening anarchy by fanning flames and fear. The investigation quickly takes a twisted turn, leading them to an enemy who thinks purification by fire is the only way to save the city.
